March has been a good month for Michelle Obama.

While many of us on the East Coast have been subject to the mental turbulence of spring-season dressing — Monday, sunny: Shorts! Tuesday: Where the hell are those snow boots? — FLOTUS has been traversing subtropical Latin America, doing important ambassadorial duties in some of her most confident looks to date.

Yes, the first lady already holds an unimpeachable fashion record. But this year, her last in the White House, Ms. O. seems to be gently communicating through clothes a budding sense of freedom. So far, starting with that viral State of the Union dress, she’s already accomplished the tricky feat of showing variety while fully embracing what she loves best: Vivid colors and patterns — especially floral print.

And here’s another theory: The first lady is trolling America, stoking the nostalgia we already feel for Obama-era excellence, saying, one flawless ensemble at a time, “Hillary, honey, good luck — I’m going out with a bang.”
